Satomi Fukami plays shamisen on track 3, Zangetsu, and koto on track 4, Godan-ginuta, on Nanae Yoshimura's The Art of the Koto, Volume One (13186-2). Fukami began to study the koto from an early age with her grandmother, and later studied with the late Kiyoko Miyagi a former ‘Living National Treasure’) and Kazue Miyagi. After graduating from the Japanese music department of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1973 and completing the master’s course at the same university in 1975, she began her performing career, giving her first recital in 1975.

She has traveled extensively overseas, to North America, Europe and Asia. She was awarded the Prize for Excellence at the Arts Festival of the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1983, the 6th Matsuo Art Award in 1985, and the Agency for Cultural Affair’s Prize for Excellence. She presently teaches at her alma mater, holds the qualification of daishihan (‘great master’) with the Kai Miyagi, and runs her own group for the study of traditional and contemporary music for koto and jiuta-shamisen.
